Spotlight on Andy Cumpstey
Dr Cumpstey is a Consultant in Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Critical Care Medicine and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton, with internationally recognised research spanning oxygen physiology, critical illness, perioperative medicine, and human performance in extreme environments.
His work bridges “bench-to-bedside” science — from investigating oxygen therapy and oxidative stress in ICU patients, to collaborating with the European Space Agency and high-altitude expedition research teams exploring how the human body adapts under extreme physiological stress.
With expertise ranging from intensive care outcomes to Everest expedition medicine, Dr Cumpstey brings a unique perspective on physiology, resilience, and the future of critical care research.
